Governments Now Get 40% Off Claude With No Minimum Spend as the $1 Deal Ends
Claude’s $1 deal for government buyers is ending. The General Services Administration says it expanded its OneGov agreement with Anthropic to offer discounted, usage-based pricing on Claude instead.
What’s confirmed. Per GSA and Anthropic:
- Eligible buyers get 40% off token-based use of Claude models available to government.
- There is no minimum order. Agencies pay for what they use.
- Eligibility covers federal agencies in all three branches, plus state, local, tribal and territorial governments.
- The discount applies to Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API.
What it replaces. FedScoop reported in September that Anthropic extended its $1-per-user offer to October 31. That deal ends today.
Not the first to switch. FedScoop noted that OpenAI’s new OneGov deal for ChatGPT had already dropped the $1 offer for discounted, usage-based pricing that runs until Dec. 31, 2028. Claude is now following the same path.
The claims. Anthropic estimates the discounts will save the government $1 billion and says about 500 government organizations use Claude. Those are company figures, not audited ones.
Our take. Paying per token is more honest than a $1 teaser, but it moves the cost question rather than solving it. Agencies used to near-free access now need real budgets, and those budgets will decide how far this spreads.
What’s real here: a real price, a real discount, and a test of whether agencies keep using Claude once it stops being nearly free.
